Spring Break!

Dudes I’m so happy right now! This week is spring break, which means I can finally relax and concentrate on the things I’ve been neglecting. So when I hung out with a few of my friends after work yesterday I mentioned how I got the next week off, and I found out one friend has two weeks of break, last week and this next week, another only has one day, and my college friends don’t get a break till after the semester! I thought that was pretty interesting.

Anyway, I am happy to announce that I have conquered my writers block, which means I’ll be able to work on my book again! I’m so close to finishing this draft that I can barely stand it! I know I’ve said this before, but I’ve been working on this book for years, and having it so much closer to finishing is a fantastic feeling. The closer I get to finishing the more impatient I get, so I have to make sure I’m not rushing the ending, so that it doesn’t end weird. Luckily I have a few friends willing to read it when it’s done and help me fix whatever inconsistencies I have and make sure it flows smoothly 🙂

I’ll continue to post my progress, and hopefully my next post will say something like “IT’S FINISHED!!” or something. And when I mean finished, I mean the first draft. The next step will be the fine tweaking and then figuring out how to publish the thing. I have no idea how long this will all take, but I have a goal to get at least all of the major writing and editing done before I have to get ready to leave for the summer so that I can work on the next book while in Virginia.

I hope all of you have a fantastic spring break if you have one, and if you don’t, I’m sorry for your loss. See ya!

Role-play and an Awesome Read!

So here’s the thing.

I’m going to write about two totally different and unrelated things because they’re both things I want to share with you and they happened around the same time. The first one is cool cause it involves my thoughts on writing (again) and the second one is just plain awesome!

So first: Role-play.

For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, my friends and I love to role-play (RP) together, which is where we send messages to each other pretending to be different people. I do this a lot with them through Facebook messenger (for group RP’s) or other apps for just two of us.

An example:

ME: *walks up to the door and knocks loudly* Hey! Open up!

FRIEND: We know you’re in there! *positions herself to kick down the door*

This is a simplified version of RP, and recently I met someone online (My first internet friend!!) and we do more detailed posts, like paragraph sized messages detailed.

So my point of mentioning this is because while rping with my new friend, I realized how nice it is to pretend to be a character you created and get into their head. The RP I’m doing now involves a character I created specifically for this RP and I wasn’t sure what kind of personality she would have. I had a basic understanding of what I wanted, but I didn’t know how she would react appropriately to different situations. As I role-played as her, I would send messages that I would randomly write because it fit her SO well, and it helped her solidify as a true character for me.

So basically my point is, in you ever want to try out role-playing like this and you’re a writer, it makes figuring out your characters so much fun! By pretending to be that character you are getting into their head, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel. Plus, it’s really easy!

When another friend of mine introduced me to role-playing, I was skeptical at first. It sounded confusing and I wasn’t sure what the heck I was supposed to do, but she convinced me to do it, and I’ve been addicted ever since. It’s just so much fun for me and it pushes my writing skills because I have to remember that I’m not able to describe my character the way I do in a book. I have to go with speech and basic action descriptions most of the time to show what my character is like.

OK, now that I’ve had that particular rant, it’s time to move on to another one! Yay!

So I don’t know if any of you readers have heard of that girl who faked her pregnancy for a school project, and if you haven’t, here’s the jist:

A girl is raised in a home by a teen mom and all of her older siblings who also became teen parents. Her mom didn’t want her to end up like she did, so she urged her daughter to make a better life for herself. So the girl went to school and worked hard. She was a straight A student, she was on the honor role, whole nine yards. Well, as she grew up it was sort of expected of her to become a teen mom as well, like some sort of family tradition. For her senior high school project she wanted to see what people would say/ how they would react to her being pregnant as a sort of social experiment about stereotypes.

I heard of the story through Tumblr, and someone mentioned how she had a book out talking about this experience called “The Pregnancy Project: A Memoir“. Well, me being the psychology buff/fan that I am, I was more than wanting to read a more detailed description of this. So, I went onto Amazon and bought the kindle version of the book, and I didn’t read it until today. I finished it in one day. I just couldn’t put the book down! I know people say that a lot, but if I had to leave for work or something, I would be really sad and I couldn’t stop thinking about where I left off.

I absolutely love this book and I highly recommend it to everyone! Seriously, go read it now. Stop reading this rambling fangirl’s ramblings and read this book!!!

No but seriously, the things she talks about this, how her family treated her, her teachers, and her peers was incredible. Only the principal, her boyfriend (who her siblings didn’t like in the first place), her mom and her best friend were the only ones who knew the truth. She talks about how she did all this reasearch, she talked to profesionals about the symptoms, her mom helped her create a fake belly, everything! And she did it because she wanted people to know what it was like to be a pregnant teen and being told how you’re life is now ruined. Her boyfriend had already graduated so he wasn’t as school, but his friends and his own parents told him how he screwed up and he was now trapped and was no longer able to have fun. Then she talked about the after affects of this project, how her life had completely changed.

Holy cow, I can hardly contain myself while writing this!! You have no idea how much I love this girl and her courage and the message she was able to share. When it all came down to it, it takes just one person saying they believe in you and support you to help someone completely turn their life around. The words and actions we portray effect SO MANY PEOPLE! We can make a difference in someone’s life just by being kind and supportive, no matter what, just like that comic I told you about a while ago.

OK, I need to stop typing before my fingers fall off. My keyboard is startiing to protest and if I keep going I’ll probably start rewriting the book any moment. Holy cow, seriously, go read that book! Again, the title is The Pregnancy Project: A Memoir. It is so worth the money and it is something I will keep for EVER!!

Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to go sit in a corner and cry about this obsession I’m developing…

Happy Late Valentine’s Day!

Or as my friends and I like to call it: Singles Awareness Day 😛

Anyway, I hope you had a good day, whether it was with someone you love or just hanging out with friends, or staying home eating chocolate you bought for yourself and watching a show you promised a friend you would watch and with nothing better to do you finally watch it and accidentally become obsessed with another show you really didn’t need….

No, I didn’t do that (I was actually with friends all day and night) but I bet at least one person somewhere did that 🙂

Anyway, The thing that prompted me to write this post is I have a friend who is really good friends with my brother, and she messaged me on Facebook asking if I would be willing to read her story idea. I told her I did and I read it, and it was a really good idea, and I loved the message behind it, and I told her as much. I also told her a couple things to watch out for if she was going to publish and if she wanted any tips or info that I would be willing to help, and if I didn’t have the answer I have a really good friend who is a master at this kind of thing (How do you think I made it this far?).

Now what happened later that day: I have a tumblr account that I like to reblog stuff than post. Well, I saw a comic on my dash that I had seen before, but it’s one of my favorites! It’s about how it doesn’t cost you anything to support someone with their work (drawing in the comic’s case) and how that that person you encourage could go on to do great things like creating the next big TV show and inspiring people, etc., while telling that person that what they drew was stupid or wasn’t good or something, and none of that stuff could happen.

Then later I was on Facebook (I have no life between work shifts :P) and a post showed that said something along the lines of ‘If someone shares something they are writing with you, that means they trust you with their inner thoughts’. I read that and I was honored! I kind of felt like a famous author being shown one of my fan’s work and them wanting my approval. It was kind of cool!

Basically the point I want to get across is if someone trusts you with their work, whether it be drawing, writing, or something like that, then they see you as someone they can trust with their heart, and you can be the one that makes or breaks them. Our words and opinions of someone’s work, especially for those who are just starting out with shaky confidence, will stick with that person for a long time. I want to be someone who can help people reach their dreams, so I try to be positive and supportive, so that if it really is something they want to do, it will be their decision to continue or stop, not because of something negative I might have said.

Well, this was just something I have been thinking about a lot lately and wanted to get it off of my chest. I hope you have a wonderful rest of the weekend!

Why must writing be difficult?

I guess so that you learn something from it…. yeah…

Just kidding! I have learned a lot from writing, including things about myself that I sort of accidentally write down without realizing it. I absolutely believe that writing down your thoughts and feelings can be therapeutic.

However, it can still be hard when you want to write something you don’t really have experience in. For instance, right now I’m trying to figure out the relationship between two of my characters in one of my books. I thought I had it figured out a long time ago, but now whenever I think about how to progress/express the relationship, I keep getting these weird feelings and thoughts about how it’s wrong somehow, and since I’ve never really been in love before, I don’t know how to have these characters realistically react to each other.

Therefore, I cannot continue writing this next scene in my book until I get this mess figured out, and if I scrap the idea completely, then that leaves a lot of work to getting it out of the rest of the book and making everything flow again.

*slowly melts into a puddle of indecisiveness and confusion of how the heck love is supposed to work*

Oh well, I know I’ll figure it out. I’ve been on a pretty good roll until now, so I suppose it’s just time to take a break for a bit. Once I come back to it with a refreshed mind it will fall into place.

Well, I feel I’ve rambled for long enough. Have a great day!

Storytellers: The Quest Prolog

Hey! Like I said before, I want to post the prolog for my first Storytellers book, ‘The Quest’ (Title subject to change).

What with this being the first book of the series, this prolog is meant to introduce what Storytellers are and what they do; It’s basically a story within a story.

So I hope you enjoy, and some feedback is definitely appreciated. Also remember this isn’t the final version, so I may change a few things here and there, but it shouldn’t be anything drastic. Thanks!

A door shines at the end of a long, dark hallway lined with dark windows. A young man starts running down the hall towards the shining door, hand outstretched. He stops running as he nears and puts his hand on the knob. He turns it slowly, and-

BEEP!…BEEP!…BEEP!

The young man groans as he blindingly reaches for the alarm blaring next to his head. After hitting the snooze button he rolls onto his back and sighs. There’s that dream again he thinks to himself.

Someone knocks on his bedroom door. “Peter? Are you awake?” A womans voice calls.

“Yeah, Mom,” Peter replies, sitting up.

“Good. Don’t forget you promised to help Aunt Sapphire with her yard today.” His mom says.

Peter rubs his eyes. “Oh yeah,” he mumbles. A little louder he says “I remember.”

“Good. See you downstairs,” she says, and the sound of footsteps tell that she left the door.

Peter sits and ponders his dream. “This is the third night in a row,” he mutters. Don’t they say that recurring dreams mean something important? He ponders. Shaking his head he gets out of bed and throws on some clothes from the dresser at the foot of his bed.

As he goes by the bathroom he notices his reflection and stops. Pale circles sit under his tired green eyes, showing the restless nights. Crap. Summer is supposed to help catch up on sleep, not lose it. He sighs, runs a hand through his dark hair to smooth it, and heads down the stairs to the kitchen.

His mom feeding his 1-year-old sister Jill. He grabs an apple off the table and starts to walk out “I’m leaving,” He says.

“Do you have your work gloves?” His mom says, wiping Jill’s giggling face.

“Yeah,” Peter says through a bite of apple.

“OK, have fun!” his mom says, but Peter was already gone.

Peter is walking down the road towards his Aunt’s house, the summer sun beating down on his back and a cool breeze blowing. He finishes the apple and eats the core when a voice says “I still don’t understand how you can do that.”

Peter turns and sees the owner of the voice, a girl around his age with long chocolate brown hair and hazel eyes. With her is a guy with dirty blonde hair and striking blue eyes. Peter grins, “Hey Jen, hey Chris.”

“The core is so nasty!” Jen replies, “I think you’re the only guy I know who likes it.”

“It’s not that bad,” says Peter, “besides, now I don’t have to carry the core all the way to my Aunt house.”

“You’re going to Aunt Saph’s?” Chris asks, “What for?”

“I promised her I would help clean up her yard, and now that’s schools out she said today would be best for her.” answers Peter.

“How long do you think it will take?” asks Jen, “Cause Chris and I want to check out the new pool and thought you would like to join us.”

They stop at a crosswalk and Chris nods in agreement “Yeah, I hear it’s pretty sweet!”

“I would love to go with you guys,” says Peter, “It’s shouldn’t take me long. How about I meet you there?”

“Sounds good to me!” Jen says, “We’ll see you soon!”

Chris waves good bye and the two friends go cross the street while Peter turns the corner. Aunt Sapphire’s house sits at the end of the dead-end road, with a bright white picket fence surrounding it. The 2 storey house is off white with black shutters, and the house is easily seen through the budding maple trees that line the road.

As he nears the house Peter sees a older woman sitting in a wicker chair on the porch, her eyes closed and a small smile on her face. She has pale red hair with streaks of grey showing her age.  At the sound of the gate opening the woman opens her eyes and sees Peter. “Peter!” she says, “Good morning!”

“Good morning, Aunt Saph,” Peter says, closing the gate behind him.

Aunt Sapphire stands up and steps off the porch. “It’s so good to see you!” she says as she embraces him.

“Good to see you too,” says Peter, returning the hug, “So what do you need help with?”

Aunt Sapphire smiles, her bright green eyes sparkling, “Right down to business, huh? Well, follow me to the back and I’ll show you what needs done.”

They go around the house and enter a good sized yard surrounded by a wooden fence. On one side of the yard is a large willow tree with a koi pond next to it, and lining the entire back fence is a garden with dead plants.

“So,” says Aunt Sapphire, “What I need is the dead plants pulled from the garden so that I can plant to ones I have inside, I need the willow pruned and the koi pond cleared of any debris.”

Peter nods, hoping it will be as easy as it sounds.

“I need to prep the plants inside, but I’ll be able to help when I’m done,” says Aunt Sapphire, “So how about you start with the garden? The tools are in the shed over there.” She points to a small white shed near the garden.

“Ok, I can do that,” says Peter.

“Good. I be out in a bit” says Aunt Sapphire. she turns and enters the house through the screen door, leaving Peter alone.

Peter pulls out his gloves. “Let’s get this over with” he mutters, as he walks over to the shed. He opens the door and looks up, then closes it. He stands there for a moment and shakes his head to clear it. He opens the door again and stands speechless. On the other side of the doors is a long, dark hallway with a glowing door at the end. This is my dream he thinks to himself. He looks back at the house for his aunt, hoping to see her or one of his friends.

Seeing no one at the door or windows, Peter runs his hand through his hair, trying to register what is going on. “I must be going crazy,” he says aloud, “Either that or I’m still asleep.” He turns and faces the shed again, the door still shining brightly. “If I’m asleep,” he says slowly, “Then will I finally open the door?” He looks around and takes a tentative step into the shed.

Peter walks down the hallway, gaining speed with each step, until he is running towards the door. He stops in front of the door and with a shaking hand grasps the door handle. Half expecting to wake up he doesn’t do anything, but the door is still there, glowing a little bit brighter. He takes a deep breath, turns the handle and pushes the door open. The light gets brighter, blinding him. He shuts his eyes against it covers his face with his arms. He hears a whooshing noise, the door slamming shut, then silence. Peter opens his eyes slowly, and finds himself in a shadowy room, with the only source of light coming from a large fireplace with a roaring fire. “What. The. Heck.” He says astonished. He looks around and finds himself in a small room without windows or any other doors, with large shadows hiding any details.

Peter looks at the fireplace and notices an old woman sitting in a rocking chair, staring into the fire. Her silver hair is in a tight braid and her brown eyes sparkle with life, and a silver blanket covers on her lap that shimmers in the firelight. She wears what looks like a once fancy dress with holes and stains that resemble dirt and grass. How old is this lady? Peter asks himself.

As though she heard his thoughts the woman turns and notices Peter. She smiles, the wrinkles in her face deepening.  “Hello my child,” she says in a soft voice, “I’ve been waiting for you.”

“For me?” asks Peter, “Why?”

She gestures towards a soft armchair in front of her. “Please sit down.”

Peter hesitates at first, but the gentleness of her voice reassures him and he sits in the chair, sinking into the cushion. It’s so comfortable he observes. He turns to the old woman, “So who are you? Are you the reason for my weird dreams?”

“All your questions will be answered,” The woman says. As she stares into his eyes, Peter feels as though she could see into the core of his heart. Suddenly the connection is broken and she sits taller in her chair and looks satisfied. “I promise to answer your questions, but you must do something for me first,” she says.

“What would that be?” asks Peter suspiciously.

“I want you to listen to a story.”

“A what?” asks Peter, not quite sure if he heard correctly.

“A story,” repeats the woman, “This place is where those from the past can share stories with certain people throughout time, to help teach them. Will you please listen to this story? It will teach you important lessons.”

Peter thinks for a moment. This must be a dream. I passed out in Aunt Saph’s backyard and am having another strange dream. Finally deciding there wasn’t anything better to do he says “Yeah, I’ll listen to your story.”

“Wonderful!” The woman says happily, “Then listen carefully…

Happy New Year!

Goodbye 2014 and hello to 2015! May this new year be better than before.

One piece of news I have is this blog now has it’s own domain name! It it the same as before, just without the .wordpress part. It’s really nice!

Also, my first Storytellers book is getting really close to being done! I’m way excited! So, in a bit I’m going to post a couple of excerpts from it, like the prolog, so that you can get an idea of what this book is going be like, and also give me some feedback!

Once I put in the last bit of the story I’ll be able to have it fully looked over for spelling errors and such, and then I’ll be able to publish!

So, happy New Year, and please have a wonderful day!

It’s finished!

I did it! I finished it!! ‘Words of Wisdom’ is officially complete!

And I have a PDF version for download here!!

Eventually I’m going to make an ebook version for this, but that won’t be for a while. Anyway, I really hope you enjoy this and let me know what you think of it! Feel free to leave a comment or you can email me at jasminemariebooks@outlook.com.

Also, please don’t redistribute this without asking me first. I would love more people being able to see read this and all, but I would rather the link to my blog be what is shared.

Thank you and I hope you all have a wonderful day!!

Two posts in one day! Sweet!

So I’m just letting you know I added another page on here about my book series, ‘The Storytellers’. It’s just a little explanation of what it’s about and what I hope to accomplish. It’s a little rough, so I’ll go in and edit it when I get my thoughts better in order and as the story reveals itself to me.

Have a wonderful rest of the day!

So close!

I am now putting the finishing touches on ‘Words of Wisdom’! Dang that was fast. What is it now, 2 days since I announced it? Dang.

Well, all that’s left is editing one last page, figuring out how to make this program do what I want, and then print! The layout is fighting me every step of the way, but once this last page is done I’ll be able to create the PDF version! Woo!

So keep your eyes open for when I announce that and we’ll go from there. Yay!

Have a wonderful day!!

New Project!!!

Hi! So I’m really REALLY pumped about this new project I’m working on. It’s called ‘Words of Wisdom’ and I got the inspiration for it yesterday.

Just so you know, I am LDS and I am a part of a Single Adult ward. Every Monday night we have different activities and just enjoy each others company.

So, last night we had a fireside, and we were all given a piece of paper. on this paper were two questions: What words of wisdom would you give your fellow young single adults and what words of wisdom would you have liked to been given 5 or 10 years ago?

Then the person in charge took all of the papers and he read them out loud and we shared out thoughts. It was an incredible experience! What’s even better was I was feeling rather ill before hand and I didn’t think I was going to be able to go, but I’m sure glad I did!

So about halfway through I got this prompting. ‘Ask him if you can take these and create a pamphlet for others to benefit like you have.’ I was so excited! I think that was what kept me going to the end, even though I wasn’t doing very well.

Long story short, he agreed to the idea as long as I give the originals back to him. Holy cow I’m getting excited just writing about it! I’ve already started and once i get all of the comments into my program I’ll put it together.

So why am I telling you this? Because I want to share it with you! Once it’s completed I’m going to upload a PDF for you to download for free! I’ll let you know more details as I get closer to finishing. I will have it done by Sunday so it will be here pretty soon!!

Thanks for reading and I hope you have a great rest of the day. Bye!
